I have purged the clothes in my closet many times.
This week I did another little master redesign…
One of the best decisions I made -years ago –was to traded the 3 walls of hanging space into 2 walls and created this.
~A wall for shoes and turtlenecks. - Um… When it is clean, it really is awesome!
However, my closet is not just a clothes closet.
Over the years, I have begun hiding gifts, Halloween candy and banned toys here as well. But my hiding spot is out.
Also as the years have progressed, I have taken to fully undressing and dressing IN the closet. I don’t need my school age children scared by my naked body!
Hence my dresser is a virtual wasteland of space.
I have always used some of my dresser drawers for purposes other than clothing. The little door has always hidden videos and now DVD’s.
My redneck self decided last fall to remove an unused drawer and put the DVD player and TIVO off in it’s spot.
One of the big bottom drawers has always held old journals, prayer notebooks, etc.
A few years ago I moved my bras into the closet on a shelf. So I have 2 barely used drawers and 3 functional dresser drawers.
The barely used ones were designated for couponing overstock last fall as well.
I am telling you all this because this is the information that is needed to develop for ME a functional clothing storage solution.
First I need to purge all clothing that doesn’t fit.
(This was a quick one for me since I just completed the closet makeover last year. I have been too busy to shop!)
Next – am revamping my closet “shelving wall”.
Ok the wall is empty. I want to put kid’s banned items and gifts in my dresser drawers. These pillows and the second vacuum are going in the basement!
I am going to use these small bookshelvy things on the side and underneath my current shelving to create cubbies and elevate my shoe storage. (Note I had to remove a wire shelf to make this fit.)
I am putting this smaller shoe storage on top. (I may buy a bigger matching one later, but for now… Getter done!)
Note – I have been using this new system for a full year and the smaller shoe organizer on top creates a little shelf to the left that I use for baby powder and the iron.
Now to fill in.
The cubbies are for my collection of bags, a new basket for clothing to donate, a basket for hangers, linens, and boots.
Shoes are back were they started as are turtlenecks, painting clothes and sweaters.
Pjs have found a new home on the shelves and out of the dresser. But my favorite addition is…
My new “under clothes” shelves. These drawer organizers fit perfectly in my shoe holder and hold each item I have snugly.
I used a sharpie to write my trouser sock color on my bins to aid in morning dressing,
Note ** I kept my socks in the same color order they were in my dresser: blue, brown & cream, black.
Don’t change what you know and IS working!!
The fridge mate is the perfect size for my undies.

UPDATE – a few months later hubby bought me an electric fireplace for my bedroom! We sold the dresser, I no longer used, to make space!
Here are some of the products I used in this project:
