Where do I START organizing? That’s the number one question I get asked as a professional organizer.
And while that is a loaded question with multiple “right” answers, I have decided to start all of my clients with a simple system I call The Sunday Basket.
It’s not magic, and you don’t have to use a basket… any bag or box will do.
You see, organization is a way of living, and “being organized” is a way of thinking.
The Sunday Basket is a system for processing mail, kitchen counter “to do” papers, and ongoing household projects.
The weekly routine of collecting, processing, and maintaining household to do’s and papers is the perfect training ground for all your future home organization skills.
And, like it or not, the mail just keeps on coming… giving us plenty of practice to hone and refine our organizing skills.
The key to the Sunday Basket is that you have to go through everything in the basket EVERY Sunday! Knowing that I would review everything in the Sunday Basket each week meant that my brain could relax and know there was a plan to get everything done. As I gained skill in managing my papers, I started sorting school papers and mail right into the Sunday Basket if it could wait until next Sunday.
The Sunday Basket frees your mind from worrying that things will get done and allows you to focus your energy on what you need to get done. I have chosen Sunday because it is the day that works the best for my personal, work, and family life. For you it may be Monday or Friday. But, no matter what, you need a consistent day!
