3 Weeks To The Holidays: Stock Up On Basics

Here are the Top 10 items to stock for the holidays so you can enjoy your family instead of the long lines at the store. | Organize 365

I have been blogging quite a bit about how I “bulk shop” for our family’s routine health and beauty supplies.

Last month, I shared how Meijer is my ONE stop shop for monthly shopping, and this week I shared how shopping at Meijer saves me time and money.

The last thing we have extra of in the month of December is TIME.

Even if you do not want to do bulk shopping like I do, you might want to try it out this week.

As I type this, Cincinnati is being slammed by a snowstorm. I was going to be doing my BIG shopping trip today, but moved it to yesterday for obvious reasons.

And I REALLY stocked up. Not only did I buy my normal HUGE amount of monthly goodies, but I added holiday treats, gift cards for gifts, a few actual gifts from the toy area and a little treat for me.

Top 10 items to stock for the Holidays

If this is a new idea for you, I’d suggest you consider stocking up on these 10 items this week.

1. Paper Plates

It’s hard to build memories if you are washing dishes all month. Using paper plates for easy meals gives you extra time to wash all the good china when you have your big sit down dinners.

I also use paper bowls to divide out ingredients and mix items in cooking.

2. Drinks

Yesterday, I added a few cases of soda to my cart and a few 2 liter bottles of 7-up. Our family drinks Gatorade, water, coffee and iced tea. This time of year, it is nice to have a few more options for our family and any guests.

I also bought extra tea and coffee. Oh. My. What would I do without caffeine in December?!

3. Toilet Paper and Tissues

DO you need an explanation here? :)

4. Medicine

If you are reading this post the day it is being published, you’ll notice it’s late. That’s because it’s winter. And with winter comes: colds, flu, snow days, etc.

I do keep a stock of 2 packages of the 5 medicines we routinely use during the cold and flu season. However, we plowed through the stash last week. I was so happy that I didn’t have to go out and buy items while we were sick, and I have quickly restocked!

5. Stamps

Tis the season to mail cards, thank you notes and those pesky monthly bills. Oh, and “forever” stamps make a nice stocking stuffer. I always enjoyed getting that in my stocking when I was in college and newly married!

6. Toiletries

You don’t have to go nuts like I do, but check the shampoo and spray bottles. Are you almost out? What about the kiddos?

7. Snacks

Vacation = eating. Right?! I love snack foods and have cut WAY back on what I usually buy. However, this week I leisurely strolled the chip, cracker and cheese aisles to find fun munchies for the long vacation days.

Now this is important. DO NOT put these snack in the pantry. HIDE THEM until winter break! Otherwise, they’ll be gone!

8. Crafts

I LOVE to do puzzles. I started one during Thanksgiving break, and it is waiting for me to finish it during winter break.

Abby is a craft-a-holic. I have bought a few small crafts for her to do the days leading up to Christmas before she gets her gifts.

Some kids need to be entertained – plan for it.

9. Mints and Gum

I like fresh breath. :)

10. Cash

No, you can’t get that at the store. We are trying to be more cash based in our spending and the banks will be closed many days over the winter break. I am planning now how much to take out and what we will need cash for over the break.

I’m loving #7! I have so many things hidden around my house right now…I need a spreadsheet to keep it all organized!

The only other thing I would add is maybe stocking up on my baking supplies for the long cookie baking day at Grandma’s! And some Motrin for the headaches that will surely come from having 3 kids and a husband home for over 2 weeks! I guess that might fall into the meds and caffeinated beverages categories! :)
