40 Weeks 1 Whole House: Week 16: the linen closet

Is your linen closet organized?

We have lived in our home for 18 years. Many of the homes I organize are family homes that have been the hub of the family for decades.

If you want to know how many decades? Check the linen closet. Linen closet organization is like an archeological dig.

Each child’s bed had 2 complete sets of flannel sheets and 2 regular sheets. A few years ago when I did my first pass through this closet, I eliminated 4 sets of my own childhood sheets that I “saved”!

We also have lots of extra blankets and sleeping bags in this closet. The blankets are all currently in use. :)

My goal was to get down to what we really needed and used and hopefully have room for towels!

I also have a master bathroom linen closet that I will show you in a few weeks.  I wanted to move our extra master bedroom sheets into this hall closet as well.

Questions to ask yourself when organizing your linen closet.

1. Why do you have so many… sheets, towels, blankets?

2. Do you LOVE the ones you have?

3. How many do you “need” of each?

A few years ago, I tackled a client’s linen closet while she was away. When she came home, she was amazed at what we found! As each new set of towels were purchased, the old ones were stored “just in case.” This cycle had been completed 4 times.

The same was true for bed linens. Each new set had a back up and a back up for the back up and so on.

So how many do you keep? Well, that’s going to depend: on your space, frequency of doing laundry and personality.

Here is my client’s after. Yes, she kept a lot AND she went out and bought NEW towels too. :) But, she works 60+ hours a week away from home and has twin 2 year olds. If the flu strikes this house, they need back ups!

So, what about my linen closet? Well, I asked myself a lot of questions:

1. Why do I have these sheets, and do the kids like them?

I like flannel sheets and the kids used to, but I keep the house warm and they don’t like them anymore. So, GULP, I got rid of them. I realized that flannel sheets were a big deal to me as a child, but not my kids – so, they’re gone.

2. My kids only use the fitted sheet. Why do I have whole “sets” of sheets?

Well, it’s “normal” to make a bed with a fitted and a flat sheet. I am constantly fighting what is “normal” and what works for us. So I didn’t get rid of the flat sheets, but I did move those up to the top shelf. I don’t use them, but I just can’t get rid of them.

And, you know what? I am finding out lots of other kids are like mine. :)

3. How many sets of sheets do we need?

I usually wash the sheets and put them back on the bed the same day. I have always had 2 sets or more of sheets for the kids, which has been great when they are sick, or I don’t get the laundry finished.

For 3 years we only had one set of sheets for our bed, which was a little too tight a few times. So when I was out shopping with my aunt and saw a good deal on a second set of sheets, I grabbed it.

For most families 2 sets of sheets is a good number. In houses that don’t have linen closets, I store the extra sheets in the top of the bedroom closet.

4. Towels. What’s with the towels?

Well, in the old bathroom, I had the kids hang their towels on command hooks behind the door and stored the extra towels in the hall closet…which was a pain, because the kids would forget to check for their towel and yell for me from the shower.

SO when I redid the bathroom, I put up a 4 hook towel rack. Now, I just wash all 4 towels and bring them up to hang in the bathroom. NO FOLDING. :)

Now that I am working full-time +, I would like to buy a few more towels. The kids use them only once {which is OK with me}, and I don’t want to worry that the towels aren’t clean.

5. What else goes in a linen closet?

Well, a LOT is stored in my master closet, but not much in this hall one.

I keep our shoe shining kit that we haven’t used in a decade, but will need the second I pitch it. And LIGHT BULBS. I can’t believe how often light bulbs burn out at bedtime! I keep just a few packages here so I don’t have to run downstairs when getting the kids in bed.

I also have a fire extinguisher in case we need to run down the steps and they are on fire.

And Abby’s Orbees foot soak for Epsom salts.

We have a small cape with limited closet space and limited bathroom storage. The linen closet has towels, toiletries, medications and cleaning products, as well as extra tp.
